A blocked bathtub drain is a very common problem and one that we at Plumbers Bromley see almost, if not, every day. Fortunately, a blocked bathtub drain is often an easy DIY fix. Here are some of the most common ways to clear a blocked bathtub drain. Clear out the blockage by hand: Lift or unscrew the waste cover in the bathtub. If you see anything, likely a mix of hair and soap scum, simply pull it out and replace the waste cover. Use a plunger: If clearing the blockage by hand doesnt work, try a cup style plunger. Fill the bathtub with enough water to create pressure when pushing the plunger up and down, but not so much that the water will splash outside the bathtub. The pressure created from pushing the plunger up and down is often sufficient to dislodge a minor blockage.Bicarbonate of soda and vinegar: This is an inexpensive and environmentally friendly solution which works best for a slow draining bath. It will not work to dislodge a serious clog. First, dump a pot of hot water down the drain followed by 125 ml of bicarbonate of soda. Allow the baking soda to sit for a couple of minutes, then pour in 250 ml of vinegar and a bit more hot water. Allow that to sit for about 10 minutes then flush with boiling water. The chemical reaction between the soda and vinegar can be enough to loosen the blockage. Chemical drain cleaner: If none of the above solutions work, you could try a chemical drain cleaner. There are several varieties available at your local DIY shop.If youve tried everything and your drain is still blocked, give us a call at Plumbers Bromley and well be pleased to help.
